Read the car’s request
Not every diesel uses AdBlue, and not every emissions warning is a request for more fluid. Read the message and the handbook for the exact vehicle. If the display gives a remaining range or a refill quantity, take those instructions seriously and plan before the deadline. A fault message may require diagnosis even when the tank is not empty.
AdBlue is a dedicated exhaust-treatment fluid, not a fuel additive. The filler may be beside the diesel cap, in the boot or elsewhere according to the vehicle. Identify it from the manual and markings rather than colour alone. A familiar blue cap can be a helpful clue, but it is not a substitute for confirming which opening you are using.
Buy and handle it as a specific product
Choose a sealed, correctly labelled product meeting the vehicle’s requirements, including the applicable AdBlue quality standard. Check storage guidance and the container’s date information. Do not dilute it, mix in additives or transfer it into an unlabelled container. Clean handling matters: equipment previously used for fuel, oil or other fluids is unsuitable.
Use the filling arrangement and quantity described for the car. Some systems require a minimum addition to recognise a refill, while overfilling or forcing an unsuitable nozzle creates other problems. Follow the product instructions for spills and protect the surfaces they identify. Keep the cap and surrounding area clean, then close everything securely when finished.
Know when filling is not the answer
If AdBlue accidentally goes into the fuel tank, or diesel enters the AdBlue tank, do not start the engine. Stop the process and contact professional assistance with a clear explanation of what went where. Do not attempt to dilute the mistake with more of the correct liquid. The required response depends on the contamination and vehicle system.
After a correct refill, follow the manufacturer’s recognition procedure rather than repeatedly adding more because the message has not cleared instantly. If an error persists, arrange diagnosis and keep the container details and amount added. Good recordkeeping helps separate an ordinary refill from a system fault without guessing at expensive components.
