Decide how long the pause will be
A fortnight without driving is not the same as seasonal storage. Read the manufacturer’s guidance for the expected duration, especially for a hybrid or electric vehicle with specific battery instructions. Record the current mileage, service dates and any existing faults before the car is put away. Storage should not become a way of forgetting a warning that was already present.
Choose a suitable secure location and remove rubbish, food and unnecessary moisture from the cabin. Check that windows and closures are properly shut. Avoid covering a dirty or wet car with a material that traps moisture or rubs the paint. If using a cover, select one intended for the location and vehicle rather than an improvised sheet that can flap against the bodywork.
Battery care needs the right equipment
Ask about a compatible maintenance charger if the car will be unused long enough for this to matter. The correct connection points and battery chemistry are vehicle-specific. Do not disconnect a battery casually: alarms, stored settings and management systems can be affected. Follow the handbook and charger instructions, or have the workshop set up an appropriate plan.
Starting the engine briefly every few days is not automatically a useful solution, and an engine must never run in an enclosed space. A car that is not roadworthy should not be taken for a drive merely to charge its battery. For electric vehicles, the recommended state of charge and connected-storage settings may differ from familiar advice for a petrol car.
Returning to use is a separate check
Before the first trip, inspect tyres for condition and pressure, check the appropriate fluid levels and lights, and look for fresh leakage or damage. Include any spare or puncture kit you expect to rely on. If the car has stood a long time, arrange professional advice about brakes and other systems rather than assuming that starting successfully proves it is ready.
Treat unusual noises, warning messages or changed braking as reasons to stop and investigate safely. Keep scheduled maintenance based on time as well as distance. A careful return inspection is especially valuable when the next planned use is a long holiday journey: discover a flat tyre or overdue service before the bags are loaded, not when everyone is waiting to leave.
