Dirt can imitate wear

Road film, insects and dried residue can stop an otherwise usable blade from clearing the windscreen. With the car parked, clean the glass using a suitable automotive glass product and the manufacturer’s guidance. Remove loose grit before wiping it across the surface. A clean pane gives you a fairer basis for judging the blade than repeatedly sweeping a dirty screen and hoping the marks disappear.

Examine the wiping edge safely

Use the prescribed service position if the arms sit below the bonnet edge. Do not force them upward against the bodywork. Gently clean the rubber with a suitable damp cloth, without aggressive solvents or abrasive treatment. Look for splits, missing sections or a rubber edge that has separated from the blade. Keep control of a raised arm: its spring can snap it onto the glass, especially if the blade has been removed.

Try the result on wet glass

Return the arms correctly before operating the system, then test with washer fluid or water on the glass. Do not judge performance by dragging dry rubber across a dry windscreen. A remaining line, repeated skipping or an uncleared section in the driver’s view means the problem needs further attention. If the blade is damaged, cleaning will not restore its shape. If a new correct blade behaves poorly, the arm, installation or glass condition may need inspection rather than another identical purchase.

Choose a replacement that actually fits

Match the vehicle, position, length and connector, including the rear wiper where fitted. Two front blades may be different lengths, and a connector that almost clicks is not properly secured. Follow the supplied fitting instructions or ask a workshop to do it. Check the attachment and operation before driving in rain. Packaging claims about long life do not override what you can see through the screen today.

Do not postpone poor visibility because a blade was bought recently. Equally, a routine wipe of the glass and blade can prevent unnecessary replacement when contamination was the real cause. Keep the washer reservoir suitable for the season, free frozen blades before use and remove heavy snow separately. Wipers are there to clear water and ordinary road spray, not to scrape a frozen windscreen into service.
