Start with the product instructions

Winter screenwash is intended to keep the washer system useful in cold conditions, but different bottles provide different protection. Some are ready mixed; others are concentrates with a dilution table. Read the actual label rather than assuming that every winter product offers the same temperature rating. The temperature printed on the front may apply only to a particular mixture.

Think about where the car will spend the night as well as where it will be driven. A mild home forecast does not describe an early departure into colder inland or mountain conditions. Choose an appropriate product using its instructions and the vehicle guidance. Do not add engine coolant, household detergent or other improvised chemicals to the washer reservoir.

The remaining summer mixture matters

Pouring a little strong concentrate into a nearly full tank of summer wash does not automatically produce the protection advertised for the concentrate. The final mixture includes everything already present. If you do not know what is in the reservoir, ask a workshop or follow the vehicle’s safe changeover guidance rather than inventing a reassuring calculation.

Identify the correct filler using the washer symbol and handbook. Keep the product in its original labelled container, away from children and pets, and avoid spills onto surfaces that the product instructions say to protect. After filling, secure the cap. A screenwash bottle should never be reused as a drinks container, even when it has been rinsed.

Test before the difficult morning

Check the washers in safe parked conditions before the cold spell, using a brief operation on glass that is not frozen. Confirm that the jets reach the intended area and that the wipers clear it. The fluid in the pipes may differ from what has just been poured into the tank, so follow the product guidance for bringing the new mixture through.

If the system freezes, do not keep holding the control and straining the pump. Let it thaw safely and have persistent failure investigated. Clear snow and ice properly before driving; washer fluid cannot replace visibility. Preparing the mixture ahead of time is easier than trying to solve a frozen system while road spray steadily covers the windscreen.
