Arrange the condition in advance
Ask the seller whether the vehicle can remain unused before your appointment. Explain that you would like to observe its ordinary first start rather than arriving after it has been warmed for the viewing. Agree a practical time. If the car is already warm when you arrive, note that the planned observation was not possible; do not turn that fact alone into an accusation.
A warm engine may have an innocent explanation, such as moving the vehicle or a prior appointment. The useful response is to ask and decide whether another viewing is needed. Do not touch hot components to prove a temperature or rely on one gauge position as a complete account of recent use. Your aim is an honest condition of inspection.
Observe an ordinary start
Let the owner operate the car normally according to its instructions. Watch the warning sequence from the cabin and listen for a new or pronounced irregularity, without standing near moving components. Note whether the engine starts readily and settles as expected for the model. Some warm-up behaviour varies, so avoid declaring a defect because another vehicle sounded different.
Do not ask for repeated starts, hard revving or a demonstration in an enclosed garage. If there is heavy smoke, a serious warning or an unsafe condition, stop the viewing activity and seek professional assessment. A purchase inspection should not create damage or exposure simply to produce a more dramatic example of a possible fault.
Keep the result in proportion
A smooth cold start is one useful observation, not a complete mechanical certificate. It cannot show every intermittent issue, every condition under load or the state of hidden components. Combine it with the service history, an ordinary safe test drive where appropriate and an independent inspection suited to the vehicle. Do not let one reassuring minute replace the rest of the decision.
If something concerns you, describe it precisely and ask for an explanation supported by records or an assessment. Avoid negotiating around a guessed repair cost before the cause is known. Record whether the concern occurred only cold and share that with the inspector. The value of the visit lies in preserving the condition that made the observation possible.
Ask whether the seller moved the car shortly before the appointment. Even a brief repositioning can mean that what you observe is a restart rather than the first start you intended to see.
