Write the sequence before the explanation

An intermittent starting problem is frustrating partly because it can vanish before anyone else sees it. A note made while the event is fresh helps more than a confident guess about a part. Begin with the last normal journey, the parking period and the first failed attempt. Use approximate times honestly; invented precision makes the record less useful.

For example, 'drove for half an hour, parked for ten minutes, then one click and no engine movement' describes a sequence. 'Starter is broken' is a conclusion. The first account leaves room for testing. Include whether the engine was cold or already warm, and whether the same conditions have produced the problem before.

Keep the observations in separate boxes

Record the sound, the engine movement and the display as separate observations. A rapid clicking noise is not the same as normal cranking without firing. A key message is not the same as a battery symbol. Copy the exact wording when possible, or photograph it after the vehicle is safely stationary. Do not operate a phone while driving or create another failed attempt solely for a video.

Mention what happened next. Did you wait, use a spare key or receive assistance? Did someone connect a booster or disconnect the battery? Record those actions in order, including when they made no difference. Changing several things at once makes it harder to credit the successful one, so avoid unnecessary experiments while waiting for help.

Send a small, organised packet

A concise note, one useful photograph and the relevant recent invoice are usually easier to follow than a long message thread. Include the vehicle details privately when communicating with the workshop, rather than posting registration documents or personal information publicly. If a scan was carried out, keep the original report and the date instead of transcribing only the code that looked important.

Ask the workshop how it would like to receive the information and whether the vehicle needs to be assessed under particular conditions. A failure that occurs only after parking warm may need a different plan from one that occurs after a week unused. Your record cannot diagnose the car, but it can prevent the investigation from beginning with a different problem from the one you experienced. If safety is in doubt or the vehicle is stranded, arrange assistance first and finish the notes afterwards.
