Treat visibility as the practical issue

The washer-fluid message usually concerns a simple consumable, but the need becomes immediate when salt, dust or traffic spray coats the windscreen. Check and refill before a journey that may need frequent washing rather than waiting until the reservoir is empty. If visibility is already inadequate, stop safely instead of continuing with a dirty screen.

A warning about fluid level does not guarantee that the pump, jets or wipers work correctly. After addressing the level, a brief safe check of the washer function is still useful. Do not keep operating a system that is empty or frozen.

Find the correct filler

Use the handbook to identify the washer reservoir. Cap colours are not a universal guarantee, and nearby cooling or brake-fluid reservoirs must not receive screenwash. If you are unsure, identify the symbol and location before opening anything.

Choose a washer product suitable for the vehicle and expected temperatures. Follow its dilution instructions rather than guessing a strong-looking mix. Household detergents and unrelated fluids are not substitutes. In cold weather, a summer mixture may be unsuitable even though there is plenty of liquid in the tank.

If you use a concentrate, keep its instructions until the mixture is prepared correctly. The concentration needed for winter protection depends on the product and expected conditions. Adding a little concentrate to an unknown mixture does not provide a predictable result; ask for advice if the existing contents or compatibility are uncertain.

If the message remains

A full reservoir with a persistent warning may point to a level-sensing problem, but first confirm that the correct reservoir was filled and the quantity is appropriate. Do not repeatedly overfill to force the sensor to respond. Record the warning and arrange a check if it persists.

If the fluid disappears unusually quickly, look for a fresh wet patch while parked and note whether the leak appears only when washing. A split hose, reservoir leak and normal heavy use are different explanations. Do not reach into moving engine parts to trace a hose, and avoid dismantling trim beside traffic.

Include the rear screen

Where fitted, the rear washer may share the reservoir but use a different hose route. Check its function too before a wet journey. Keep a suitable refill available without leaving an unsecured bottle in the passenger area. A small preparation task is much easier at home than on a cold, dirty roadside.
