Establish a normal request for cooling
Before assuming the refrigerant system has failed, check the ordinary controls described in the handbook. Make sure cooling is requested, the temperature setting is appropriate and the selected mode is not directing air somewhere unexpected. Automatic systems can manage fan speed and distribution themselves, so the sound of a fan alone does not reveal what the system is trying to do.
A cabin that has been standing in strong sun will not feel comfortable instantly. Note the outside conditions and whether the air becomes cooler during normal use. Avoid judging performance only by touching one vent for a few seconds. The useful complaint is a change from the car's usual cooling under comparable conditions, not failure to make a hot cabin cold immediately.
Record the pattern
Does the system fail throughout the journey, cool initially and then fade, or work differently while stationary and moving? Are all vents affected? Does airflow remain strong? These observations help distinguish control, airflow and refrigeration questions. They do not identify a component by themselves, but they give the workshop a more useful starting point than 'air conditioning broken'.
Note any unusual noise, smell or recent front-end work. Do not reach toward belts, fans or air-conditioning pipes to feel whether they are hot or cold. Do not connect a refill can as an exploratory test. The refrigerant type, charge and servicing requirements are vehicle-specific, and pressure readings alone are not an owner-level diagnosis.
Ask what will be checked before refilling
A request for an air-conditioning service should explain the symptom. Ask whether the workshop will investigate the reason for poor cooling rather than simply add refrigerant. If a loss of charge is found, ask how a possible leak will be assessed and what the result means. Repeated refilling without understanding a recurring loss can leave the underlying problem unresolved.
After the work, ask what was found and which operating conditions were checked. Keep the report, especially if performance had faded only after a longer journey. If the system still cannot clear the windscreen adequately, treat visibility as a separate driving concern. Comfort may be inconvenient to lose; a screen you cannot see through means the journey should wait.
