Identify where the connection stops
A phone finding a Bluetooth adapter is not the same as an app communicating with the vehicle. There are several links in the chain: the physical connector, the adapter, the phone or computer, the application and the supported vehicle protocol. Write down the exact error and which stage was reached. 'Paired but no vehicle data' is more useful than 'scanner broken'.
With the vehicle safely parked, follow the reader's instructions for the required ignition state and connection sequence. Some tools need a particular app or permission on the phone. Check the manufacturer's compatibility information for the exact vehicle. Avoid assuming that a successful connection on a different car proves the same setup is suitable for this one.
Keep the simple checks non-invasive
Look at the accessible plug and socket without forcing, probing or dismantling them. A connector should not need to be bent into place. If you can see damage, contamination or something that appears loose, stop and let a professional assess it. Do not bridge pins, push metal objects into the socket or improvise a power supply to make the reader wake up.
Check the app's selected vehicle and interface against the tool instructions. If the manufacturer provides a documented restart or pairing procedure, use that rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings. Keep the car secure and avoid leaving an adapter where it can obstruct the pedals. A connection attempt should not create a new driving hazard after you finish.
Know when the tool has reached its limit
A reader that lights up but cannot communicate may have a software, compatibility or vehicle-side issue. The symptom alone does not distinguish them. Ask the workshop to test with known suitable equipment and explain whether the problem is limited to one module or affects communication more widely. That evidence is much stronger than buying another inexpensive adapter at random.
If there is also an urgent vehicle warning, deal with that warning independently of the failed scan. No communication is not the same as no fault. Save the tool model, app version, vehicle details and error message for the appointment. Together, those details give the next person a reproducible starting point without any risky electrical experiments.
